"Biyao is a very good instructor. She is very knowledgeable but explores topics in a way that truly makes it seem like she is learning alongside us. She is very straightforward and we always know what is expected of us."

MATH 1113 Precalculus [Syllabus]

Instructor of Record: Fall 2019

This is an undergraduate precalculus course offered by the Department of Mathematics. We focus on the topics of functions, inverses, trigonometry, and exponential and logarithmic relationships. [Geogebra Resources]

EMAT 4810 Connections in Secondary Mathematics I [Syllabus]

Instructor of Record: Spring 2020 (Evaluation: 4.5/5)

Teaching Assistant: Fall 2015, Spring 2016, 17, 18, 19

This is the first content course offered to pre-service secondary mathematics teachers. It focuses on developing students' mathematical content knowledge and is paired with a pedagogy course and a field experience component. We focus on the topics of angle measure, linear, trigonometric, and exponential relationships, and graphing in Cartesian and polar coordinate systems. We use, test, and refine the ARC curriculum materials in this course.

EMAT 4860 Connections in Secondary Mathematics II

Internship: Spring 2016, Fall 2017, Fall 2020

This is the second content course offered to pre-service secondary mathematics teachers (also paired with a pedagogy course and a field experience component). It focuses on the topics of fractions, fraction arithmetic, ratios, proportions, and measurement through the lenses of quantitative reasoning and unit coordination. We draw on ideas and materials created by leading mathematics education researchers including Leslie Steffe, Sybilla Beckmann and Andrew Izsák. EMAT 3400 Children's Mathematical Learning

Teaching Assistant: Fall 2020

This course is offered to Block-1 pre-service elementary teachers, and it is paired with a field experience component. We focus on the topics of counting, single- and double-digit arithmetic, based-10 number system, and pedagogical moves. We adopt the materials from the Cognitively Guided Instruction (CGI) project. We undertake extensive collaborative analyses of children's mathematical thinking based on individual student interviews, video-based classroom episodes, and students’ written representations. We also use innovative activities and tools (e.g., math walk, math games, math journals, choral counting, and number string) and discuss their roles in supporting children's mathematical learning.

EMAT 3410 Mathematics Teaching and Curriculum in PreK-5th Grade

Teaching Assistant: Spring 2021

This course is offered to Block-2 pre-service elementary teachers, and it is paired with a field experience component. We concentrate on the mathematical topics of rational number, geometry, measurement, data analysis, and algebra. We also focus on quantitative reasoning, assessment, differentiation, lesson planning and implementation, and guiding principles for teaching.
